Three Interesting Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Golf

Prize golf

We’re all familiar with the game of golf (even if we totally forgot about it before Tiger Woods’ marital problems made it relevant again). Though it might seem like a game that only old people play — which isn’t technically true since less than 35% of golfers are over the age of 50 — golf is a pretty popular sport and is much more interesting than you probably think. Here are some interesting facts about golf that you probably didn’t know.

It is a really old sport
We all know that golfing is a popular sport for some groups of Americans, and there are a few different big tournaments in the U.S. every year like the Master’s, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. What we know as modern golf was actually invented some 500 years ago in Scotland.

It’s a popular choice for charity events
Holding a golf tournament is actually a really popular activity for raising money during a charity event. People or groups pay to enter the tournament, and these are the proceeds that benefit the charity. The appeal of this type of event is that it gives people the opportunity to donate to a good cause, enjoy a day on the links, and engage in a little friendly competition. These tournaments are also often held at famous courses which is appealing for participants, who can also win golf prizes (which are often backed by hole in one contest insurance).

A hole in one is a much bigger deal than you think
We all know that the odds of a hole in one are pretty slim, but people actually make a really big deal out of them. In America, it is tradition for a golfer who got the hole in one to buy a round of drinks for everyone at the clubhouse bar. In Japan, golfers who hit holes in one are expected to throw a large party and have gifts for all of their friends, which is why many Japanese golfers have hole in one insurance. Charity events also have hole in one contest insurance to ensure that the prize for a hole in one won’t come out of the proceeds.
